From Dr. BBQ’s book Slow Fire: The Guide to Lip-Smacking Barbecue
Ingredients
- 1 quart Dr. Pepper
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon dried grated orange peel
Directions
In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the Dr. Pepper to a fast simmer. Cook until the Dr. Pepper is reduced to 1 cup, about 25 minutes.
I’ve never boiled soda before. It started out started out looking like a bottle that was shaken before popping the cap. Eventually it turned to a boil. Very cool.
Add the ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, Worcestershire, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, and orange peel.
Mix well and return to a simmer.
Lower the heat and cook at a low simmer for 5 minutes, stirring often, until well blended and thickened.
Remove from the heat and serve, or cool and store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
